What: Town meeting

Where: The school cafeteria
Summary: The village gets together for a town meeting. Let there be ideas, plans, and future festivities.

With the help of some friends and friends of friends, the school cafeteria has been transformed into a meeting space. Rows of chairs and a few benches fill the space, providing adequate seating for whoever wishes to come to the meeting.

Along the back are some tables set with cookies, pastries, and tea, juice, and coffee for people to munch and sip on, before, during, and after the meeting

By the entrance is another table. On it sits a locked box with a slit on top, small sheets of blank paper, and a few pencils and pens. This is the message box, for anyone who wishes to express an idea or thought in an anonymous manner. The box will later be opened and all the messages inside will be read out loud by Ginia.

At the front sits a platform - one of the ones built for A Midsummer Night's Dream - with a table and chair resting on top. It's where Ginia will sit during the meeting, the extra height for the purpose of being able to see anyone who may be seated in the back row.

Keeping in line with the idea of emergency preparation, I would like to discuss forming some sort of alarm system independent of the journals. While the journals are an effective way of reaching the village, there's always the possibility someone might not have a journal or them, or the posts are inaccessible in one way or another.

Any sort of alarm system is something that should be easily seen and heard across the village at all times. The easiest would be some sort of bell, with maybe some sort of visual element added on. Creating some sort of spell that would also work as a warning system has also been suggested.

I now open the floor for discussion.

What of those that reside outside the village? There is the house by the lake, the beach house, and those that would be patrolling as well as any in the mountains. A bell will work to an extent, and a spell as signal is an excellent idea, but what if something is done to prevent it?

The concept is somewhat antiquated, but beacons might be a good addition to both the bell and the spell.

This is why I propose something that can be heard or seen over long distances. As for your second question, I admit I do not know, which is why I do not suggest simply one system, but multiple systems that can work individually or in tandem. There are many unknowns in this village. The journal system could suddenly fail. Everyone could be rendered mute or deaf or blind. A shift could render everyone paralyzed. These are all possible realities and while we can prepare for the worst of things, we cannot plan for everything because we will always miss something. But you are right, even if we have systems in place, we should not rely entirely upon them in case something happens.

Beacons might work as well. We have watch towers around the village, if we have them properly staffed, they could be utilized in some fashion in case of an emergency.

[Adele considers this a long moment and nods, offering Ginia a smile. Knowing you can't prepare for everything, but trying anyway, is a sign of a compelling and reasonable leader.]

That should be more than adequate.

I've discussed the magical alarm system with you before, but I do agree that having other means would be best as well. In-in case of a shift or some other such things were to occur.

Yes, so you have. I hate to put you on the spot, but would you be willing to share the idea you had?

Oh! Ah no, not at all. [ Just a little bit nervous. ] But well I believe when I discussed it with you we had it so that different areas of the surrounding enclosure would be enveloped in a barrier of sorts. Said barriers could have different effects attached to them so that when people walked through them and the like it would give a different tone or alarm. So. Barrier A in the forest might set off an alarm like a bell whereas barrier B in the mountains would sound like a drum.

[ A pause. ] The, ah, barriers and their alarms c-can be applied to-to objects as well s-so we could carry them around with us. I-I made something similar for a house where if the barrier was breached by a certain someone whatever the object may be, say a bracelet or ring, it would glow, heat up, even vibrate and produce the sounds of the alarm when said barrier was crossed over or broken.

Thank you for the explanation. Are there any limits to the range of these barriers?

Ah. Th-there are. Due to the um...powercap. The largest area I've been able to cover so far is the school's playground. I've never tried anything larger than that. But I-I could see the extent of where it might cut off?

I like this. Maybe a bell tower, like they used to have in medieval Europe. I dunno, just somethin' I see in those fantasy movies, but it seems to work.

A bell tower would provide distance needed for the sound to carry, and could make for an attractive landmark in the village. However, we'd need to find a place to build it and the people to do so.
